Transport
The picture on the left shows a Boeing 747.
This jet carries about 500 people to destinations all over the world.
Physics has played a gigantic part in moving people all over the world. Now revise your section on Transport by working through the questions below.
- Describe what the difference is between average speed & instantaneous speed.
- A car takes two & a half hours to travel 60km. Calculate the average speed of the car during its journey.
- A motor company is launching a new car which they claim can go from 0 to 60mph in 4.5 sec.
a) Calculate the acceleration of the car.
b) If the car was travelling at 25mph when it accelerated at 5mph/s for 4 seconds then calculate the car`s new speed at the end of the four seconds.![]()
- An aircraft lands at Glasgow airport. The moment the aircraft touches down the pilot applies reverse thrust. The speed time graph of the landing is shown below:
a) Calculate the decelleration of the aircraft
b) Calculate the distance it took the aircraft to come to a halt.
c) If the mass of the aircraft is 20,000kg then calculate the force that caused the decelleration.
d) What might the speed time graph look like if the aircraft landed on a very wet runway.
- A new rocket is moving with constant speed. The force of the engine, called the thrust, is 5000 Newtons. Draw arrows on the diagram showing the forces acting on the rocket.
- Write a brief note on how you need a seatbelt in a car.
- Calculate the acceleration of this car given the forces acting on it are shown. The mass of the car is 1,000kg.
- What is the weight of a 15,000kg helicopter?
- An athlete of mass 60kg runs with a speed of 5m/s. Calculate the kinetic energy of this runner.
- A man pushes a groundmarker of mass 20kg a distance of 8m with a force of 90 N.
a) What is the work done by the man in pushing it this distance?
b) If it takes the man 12 seconds to do this calculate his power.
- A weightlifter lifts up a weight of 200kg to a height of 2.5m.
a) Calculate the potential energy of the mass at this height.
b) If the mass falls and hits the ground what would be the speed of it as it hits the ground?
- On the moon the gravitational field strength is 1.66N/kg. What would be the minimum force needed to lift a 10kg mass up from the surface?
